Carol
An incredible empathetic piece of writing. This horrific, unspeakable act gives way to an overriding feeling of helplessness at the desolation, depth of despair and worthlessness endured by Chrissie. People are looking for them, the past is catching up, and Chrissie fears losing the only thing in this world she cares about, her child.

Her clothes are ragged and skin complaints, and she lives with parents who don’t care. I found the main character of Chrissie deeply disturbing but in another way, I felt sorry for her.

DESCRIPTION:Chrissie is eight and she has a secret: she has just killed a boy. Nancy Tucker explains, “Chrissie was on my shoulder while I wrote, Julia was within me.
A Waybourne
The reader becomes immersed in Chrissie’s head, and that is not a comfortable place to reside. She tries very hard to be a good mother – though she has no experience of how motherhood is supposed to work. Both as a child, and as an adult, Chrissie has felt unworthy. ” The First Day of Spring is definitely a harrowing, uncomfortable and emotional read, which feels real.

I prefer my books with a dash of darkness or complexity and this one delivers in spades. While sometimes I found myself disliking her, at other times my heart broke for her.
