The Reading Room
Internationally respected film maker, James Aldred, reveals the secret life of The New Forest – 4 StarsAt the onset of Covid restrictions, James Aldred obtained permission to film Goshawks nesting in the New Forest. Presented as a diary running from April to the end of June 2022, the author records his time there in wonderfully readable prose. It’s also about far more than Goshawks, and there are plenty of insights into the forest’s history, its varied terrain, the species that are well established, ‘new’ residents, and those that are struggling to maintain their foothold.
Whilst, for me, this didn’t quite have the ‘wow’ factor of some previous Wainwright Prize contenders, I thoroughly enjoyed this book with its almost poetic descriptions of the New Forest. Overall: A very readable account of the New Forest, covering not only Goshawks but a host of other species too. It’s written in a style that’s easy to read and contains a lot of self-deprecating humour too.
