Nothing went wrong and the whole experience was very good. Regardless of this, the old device’s TI2531 chipset is obsolete in Home Assistant, and it was time for an upgrade anyway. I previously used the Conbee II stick (Deconz) for about a year until I bought the Aqara FP1 sensor which wasn’t yet compatible with Deconz at the time.

If you do the there is plenty of information on the internet. There are cheaper options but this fulfils all requirements and if range is an issue it appears to be very good.

I run Home Assistant on a Raspberry Pi with ZHA, and I settled on this well-supported Sonoff device with its 2652 chipset. I use now 4 of them in our house, one as coordinator and 3 as routers and they work amazingly well with a much better signal and range as ikea repeaters or other plugs.

Plugged in and worked first time. Integration is easy in many Smart Home Hubs like habitat, smart things, but I use home assistant and it works very well with ZHA and zigbee2mqtt. I passed it through to my VM on my Proxmox service and installed Zigbee2MQTT, which works better for some of my Aqara sensors. What frustrates me is how long it took me to choose a device like this!

Edu

I successfully connected Home Assistant to Alexa through an AWS Lambda integration, and it flawlessly controls my devices without relying on the cloud. As a fan of home automation technology, incorporating Zigbee devices into my network was a mandatory step. Better range than the old one, the reason for buying.

I say this realising the limits of Zigbee and my very none scientific test, I managed to reach an unreachable sensor. I bought this Sonoff USB Dongle to use with Home Assistant a couple of months back and I must say it’s one of my favourite recent purchases. The packaging was sufficient and all paper/cardboard.

I wish it could be done automatically via OTA updates but I don’t think this process would be needed very often, only if you encounter issues with some devices. No tears or traumas. The last task on my to-do list is to get a Z-wave controller to migrate my Z-wave devices and officially remove the SmartThings integration from my Home Assistant. What is the biggest issue with Zigbee?
