Also isn’t this the most prettiest proof 😍 SMALL ANGELS written by Lauren Owen (author of The Quick) is a satisfying ghost story that could also read as a gothic fairy tale, of sisterhood, first love and stories that tether us to the past.

This caused sensations of icy slivers down my spine, as I too felt the stirrings in Mockbeggar Woods. Quite astonishing.

But when they brought her into the woods, something dark was awakened and Kate has never been able to escape the terrible truth of what happened there…. I felt the fabulous characters that she created come to life and jump from the pages, with the gothic style of the writing and atmospheric macabreness. We are all clouded in shadow for much of our life, with spine prickles, premonitions and senses of foreboding sneaking up on us at random intervals.

Really distracting & unnecessary. Here, Lauren Owen has a truly unique ability … unique talent to immediately transcend the reader to events that basically take place within a week’s time yet also span centuries. Mockbeggar itself is an enthralling character, lost in the past but with its own secrets, tragedies and tales of vengeance. I could have continued reading this story on and on and on and never have wanted to finish it.
But as the story progresses, it gets darker and we realise what really happened in Mockbeggar and why the town refuses to talk about it. This was such an atmospheric read! . The Quick is one of my favorite books.
