All this points to a cracking read if you’re anything like me and get all excited about ghostly goings on and a bit of mystery! The prose, too, is irresistible. The world Laura Purcell has created gets ever more spooky when an young spiritualist is tasked with contacting the dead clients to see how they died.

Some female characters are every bit as devious as their male companions, and they are able to call forth powers that are unobtainable to others. There is definitely a style to her stories, delighting in the spook factor; in the creepiness of Victorian Gothic.
