Ms. J. E. Davis
Just like in Black Drop I was pleasantly surprised with how many brilliant twists and surprises kept me both glued to the pages and completely ignorant of what would happen. While at first not much happens aboard the ship other than winds keeping them stuck near French water, it soon become interesting when a French frigate is spotted approaching the ship.

Together they are taking a journey on board the postal ship the Tankerville to accompany the important treaty that was drawn up between the British and Americans to the American president. But when faced with the possibility of a French frigate capturing them not long after their journey begins, the important treaty soon goes missing and it’s up to Jago to find it before someone else gets their hands on it.
At the front of the book there’s a map of the journey of the Tankerville and at the end of the book there are some interesting historical notes showing how much of this story is based in fact and how much in fiction, and I like how I didn’t know the truth of what really happened historically as it made the ending an even better twist! I like how in this book he grows, especially after discovering something in a later part of the story.
Having left his employment at the Foreign Office in disgrace Laurence Jago has taken a job with his friend and newspaper reporter William Philpott. The year is 1794. Although there was a particular clue I thought I had spotted early on in the story, it turned out to be a red herring and I’m once again pleasantly surprised with how I had no idea where this book was going and how exciting and good it was to have all these twists and reveals!
