On social media I kept seeing black and white people clashing, members of the black community were angry at a lot of white people for a lot of things and the other way round too. As a white women I thought how can I be angry if I don’t know both sides of the story? wordpress.

Read it! She made me think about myself and how my actions affect people of colour. Despite the fact that I myself am used to hearing people talk this way, it was still a little strange getting through the first chapter as I’ve never read the voice before.

Certain moments made me want to grab a bullhorn and scream at the top of my lungs, others made me cry so hard I couldn’t even see the page. In addition to that, was the character development. And I loved that. Despite dealing respectfully with the topics of modern day racism and the experiences of gang culture, the author also shows the true togetherness, loyalty and love felt between the families within the book.

P. Yes, Thomas portrays black characters as having their own dialect, being drug dealers and basketball players, their neighborhoods being incredibly violent and dangerous, but, none of this justifies the fact that the police officer murdered an unarmed child – Khalil. Starr is incredible, I like to think that I would be as brave as her, but if I was in that same situation I don't know if I could be that brave.

However, I realized that they played a huge role in the story. I’m giving it 5 out of 5 stars and telling you with an aggressive amount of passion to read it as soon as you’re able. I don't think writing a review will give this book the justice it deserves.

Amandla Stenberg is absolutely incredible! Heartbreaking, hilarious, infuriating and wonderful. The second thing that some readers may consider a deal-breaker, was the dialect. Starr’s interview with the police, the murderers father speaking out, Hailey – all these things had me reaching for a pencil and scribbling inappropriate words into the margins.

They’re filled with so much love and care for one another that it brought the entire story together. so I bought this book to help me see the bigger pictures off both sides of the pitches. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking to do the same.
