The pictures are just amazing and really pull you into the story, and you have to keep looking at the detail to see the things that are happening, such as a beautiful double page towards the end has different things happening from left to right, with an important thing happening with a bear on the far right. It definitely tells a story even though there are no words.

My boy can't get enough of this picture book at the moment. We have a good giggle at the bunny's floppy ears as he wooshes past in the spinning swing ride and the hedgehog with his prickles covered in sweets to take home. At first the animals all just look at the fair, but after a couple of raccoons manage to turn the power back on, the midnight fair begins. After the power comes on in the fair, the animals begin to explore and enjoy the fair in the same way the humans do.

During the day the fairground is busy with people, but when the last of them go home from the night, and the fair’s power is shut down for the night, the animals in the woods begin to appear. The whole picture book is told in images alone, there are no words to tell the story, it’s told entirely from the different pictures.

I just love a story that’s so lovely that it can be told without words, and the things that happen, what the animals get up to is so interesting and fun to look at. The paperback, around A4 in size, is filled with thick matt pages of some really beautiful illustrations!

The story ends well and I like the ending, especially with that wolf and what happens with him and his prize. The fluorescent lights of the fair ground rides and the darkness of the night give every page a mystical, magical feel. There are animals buying tickets, riding different rides, eating the fair’s food and even enjoying some of the side games like hook a goose (yes goose not duck). Witty.
I love all the illustrations and just how detailed they are. The fair has come to town and there are creatures lurking in the woods, waiting for their turn. My only possible criticism is I think the artwork would have even more “pop” if printed on glossy paper.
A great conversation opener, little ones can make up their own story using the pictures as guidance. I love this style of picture book, you don’t need words to describe or explain what is happening, there is no need as every single picture tells more and more of the story of the animals’ midnight fair. The fox wins a fish that he later sets free, a mouse couple have a romantic embrace in the ferris wheel and some mischievous weasels steal a pretzel from the wolves on the spinning tea cups only to get caught up in its loops. What happens at night in the Fairground?
