The Reading Room
Overall: From the gorgeous cover-art through to the last page of prose, this was simply beautiful to read. Nothing about this novel seems hurried, and yet it is a story with great depth.
As with her other novels, ‘The Gardener’ features characters you want to get to know along with the most wonderful descriptions of place. Super story, gorgeous writing, and packed with positivity – 5 StarsOpening as sisters, Hassie and Margot purchase an ancient, run-down house on the Welsh Marshes, this is a story of misconstrued family relationships, of lost loves, new friendships, and the cathartic effect of nature. As Hassie and Margot work towards a better understanding of each other, they also learn to be kinder to themselves…I adore Salley Vickers’ writing for its timeless quality that is both wistful and lyrical. It is also a very uplifting tale and, as a reader, it left me feeling both gentled and inclined to be gentler to others.
