The fact that they used absurd leverage and felt comfortable with it for so long because their activity was broken into a plethora of trades of apparent (again based on their models) low correlation plus the fact that they could take some of the biggest names in Wall Street for a ride is very telling of how even "insiders" can terribly misjudge the markets. Mr.
Lowenstein is a fantastic story teller and he certainly did an incredible amount of research for this book. Having read works by Professors Taleb and Mandelbrot, the notion of financial modeling that fails to accommodate tolerance for extraordinary events or relies heavily on assumptions of normal distributions and data from the past sounds familiar to me.
