It’s not often that I get emotional when reading but I finished this book with tears in my eyes and smile on my face. For me, it was the characterization that stood out. Four strangers with four secrets but one destination crossed each other in most difficult of times.

Audiobook Comments:It’s always scary to listen to a book you loved so much. They had their own histories, secrets, and journeys. Get the book! The vast amount of research that Sepetys must have had to conduct is astounding and overwhelming just to think about.

Did the story have a good beginning? I highly recommend if you like books about WWII. More than just the disaster, the story is about the endless and countless struggles of civilians in the then East Prussia and Lithuania and those in war torn countries in general. I had lived for twenty-one years, but the recent months had changed me.

The characters couldn’t dwell on the horrific things they saw and experienced. It is winter, and harsh conditions begin an equally harsh story. The author is a WONDERFUL storyteller.
